Mq, Re Telecom New Zealand and “Peter Griffin got the number of CDMA subscribers wrong [they wrote 60 million instead of 160 million].”

“PETER GRIFFIN telecoms writer” got a number of other items wrong also.

Snips>>>

1. “.... (CDMA) A lack of seamless global roaming is its biggest downfall. “ To his credit he did, later in his article, include a statement from a Telecom official that a CDMA phone that could also roam on GSM networks was in the works. But he downplayed that with this technically correct but misleading statement –

“But such handsets are expensive to produce and are still up to a year away from being marketed. “

We have been told that Qualcomm MSM6300 equipped handset will be on the market before 2003 ye.

2. “Both W-CDMA and Telecom's logical upgrade path CDMA EV-DO boast access speeds up to 384 kilobits per second (Kbps), faster than many broadband packages now available. “

I believe the spec reads up to 2.4Mbps. Brian Modoff (DB) in his recent EV-DO Verizon tests in San Diego stated- “we recorded average data rates that were typically in the 500- 800 kbps range while observing peak rates that reached 1.2Mbps”

3. “CDMA1xRTT - Telecom's latest evolution, provides data transfer speeds averaging 60 kilobits per second (Kbps) to 80Kbps, twice as fast as dial-up internet.”

That’s true, but why then did he offer a misleading comparison to GPRS using “data speeds up to” in the following statement?

“GPRS - general packet radio service, with data speeds up to 114Kbps. The next step up from GSM. Popular among business mobile and Vodafone Live! users. “

Mq, is “PETER GRIFFIN ( telecoms writer)” knowledgeable in this area and distorting the facts in favor of the GSMA view , or is he just another "clueless journalist"?

Hi Maurice, do you know anything about Walker Wireless as mentioned below?

?MMDS and related broadband wireless services in the lower microwave region alone offer the potential for truly pervasive connectivity,? said Jon Hambidge, IPWireless? senior director. ?One network can truly support fixed point residential and business use and mobile use. Hotspots already give us some idea of the attractiveness of such a service, but they aren?t truly pervasive and they won?t be. MMDS, given the proper equipment, will allow the user to enjoy the advantages of a hotspot anywhere and to experience true broadband data rates over a mobile phone, something no 3G network has ever been able to provide. We?re already getting a glimpse of what will come in the networks set up by Walker Wireless in New Zealand. Today they support full mobility, in addition to true high-speed fixed and portable broadband.?
