It seems to me that the people trying to force him to perform services on people he doesn't want to (or no one at all) fit your description at least as well as he does (except the above the law part). They don't want to accommodate his interests and principles and feelings. They think they are smarter then him, and that they know what is best for his practice better then he does.

Yep. That is the nature of laws made under a Democratic system of government. A majority of whatever group is making the laws (whether the people by referendum, a local, state, or national legislature, or a duly empowered bureauracy) think they know what is best for society better than an individual does. They may or may not have considered the feeligns, interests, and principles of some or all of the people to whom the law will apply, but if they have, they have decided that they know better.

You have, basically, summed up in a nutshell the very nature of government.
