I read recently that 50% of the crimes committed are directly due to drugs.

As long as the overwhelming majority of the country feels that drugs should be illegal, I consider the problem unsolvable. Every time a Public Official or Politician comes out for a softer approach, they find that they have touched a "Third Rail."

Too Bad.

But every day in the paper, there are stories about meth labs exploding, thefts of all sorts, robberies, murders, etc. I read recently that 50% of the crimes committed are directly due to drugs.

That comment assumes that legalization means simply halting enforcement and everything else continues as is. That's a scare tactic. It would never happen that way. The current approach would be replaced by regulation, which means that you wouldn't have meth labs blowing up any more than you have Lipitor labs blowing up now. There might be new and different problems associated with the regulation approach, but not the problems you suggest. Legalization would mitigate those.

<< there are stories about meth labs exploding>>

Meth labs are a big problem in my area. None have exploded but when they bust one the guys go in wearing HAZ MAT suits because all the chemicals are nasty. Most of the labs are in the kitchens of apartments and rental homes, many with small children in the house.

Corn is the reason we have so many labs here. Corn needs nitrogen in the form of ammonia and there are 2,000 gallon tanks of NHO4 parked all over in the spring and fall. They can steal it easier here than buy it in most of the US.
