I think that's the reason for "Windows with 64-bit extensions" vs. "Windows for Itanium".

Intel was counting on be able to start talking about "Windows for Pentium64" to osborne sales for "Windows for AMD64", but Microsoft has made it clear that whatever OS and software developments are presented for one will be supported for the other - so any drum thumping, such as the Centrino campaign, will benefit AMD64 as well as Pentium64.

Microsoft isn't interested in losing 2 years of sales increases from the 64-bit revolution just so Intel can stay fat and happy.

At least, that's my current impression.
