I have a certain sympathy with them in this which flows from my rural background. Much of what we did on the farm was dangerous (I remember almost dying when I became too weak to shovel/pull any more grain away from the opening--and that damn auger just kept on chuggin). There came a point where there was no oxygen left to breathe--only the heavy chaff. Then the auger stopped, and life went on.

I don't believe the Amish should have an exemption, but I do believe that child law should recognize a distinction between working as family and working as wages. Perhaps they do...

And danger should be the overriding issue--not work in and of itself.

Tough choices.
Child labor laws were a great victory in their time . It will be interesting to see how congress decides this case, and what the ramifications will be.
