I thought Mahathir's speech pretty moderate under the circumstances, actually ...

Really? I found it to be a despicable bit of anti-Semitic rhetoric. The call for reform, unity, and attention to science and technology instead of dealing with picayune points of theology was in my view a call to arms against Jews.

The Islamic world is frustrated because it has not followed up on its former glories. Rather than focus on its own problems, it is doing what other failed cultures have traditionally done--look for a scapegoat. That doing so only leads to more failures has escaped most of them.

Mahathir is dangerous because the call he makes for Islamic reform is not one designed for betterment of the masses and the culture. It is designed to develop more efficient ways to deal with the Israelis.
