"Should I therefore condemn higher education or biology? What is more important here is that a truer reading of the New Testament inspired and energized a movement to close down the slave trade......."

You are going way off track in order to avoid the admission that religion has been both cruel and kind. It was the ability of people to read past the Old and the New Testaments and to rely on only those parts which presented humanistic values and a respect for man which allowed a movement against slavery. Like a "truer reading" of Paul enabled women to be emancipated as well. Right! Truer reading as in, let us return those ugly words to a cultural/historical context and leave them there! That is the only way we get a "truer reading" of brutal sentiments.

"People use things to rationalize their bad behavior all the time."

You inveigh against people rationalizing bad behaviour but you then atempt to rationalize their good behaviour by the same book! Please, Neo. Those sorts of stumbles are unimpressive!
