The best outcome from this "Rush is a junkie" episode would be if thoughtful people from across the political spectrum would begin to agree that drug use and abuse is an issue that has not been properly addressed by the criminal justice system and that changes in attitude and law on this topic are long overdue.

This is a Bush/Ashcroft policy that I'm strongly opposed to. All the drug warriors, narcs and cowboy cops cause much more damage, in so many ways, than any "public good" that they're purportedly upholding.

The "War on Drugs" diverts resources from fighting terrorists, encourages corruption, enhances peripheral criminal activity, attacks our civil liberties, targets racial minorities disproportionately and is destroying countries such as Columbia, just to name a few consequences.

And emptying our prisons of non violent drug users, many of whom are serving Draconian "mandatory sentences", would not only save taxpayers a ton of money, but ensure that truly dangerous criminals are not turned loose for lack of prison capacity...
