Dan3, Re: Intel bet that they could beat the laws of physics and do without SOI until .65 - but (so far) they were wrong.

Are you serious when you phrase this in such a bold way? Can you elaborate a little? Also, if we believe some of the rumors, why can they produce 2.8/3.0 GHz Prescott Celerons, but not the real deal? Is the physics aspect you refer to something to do with leakage and power dissipation?

Also, to be a bit of a skeptic, why do we think AMD's 90nm process should go smoother? Because they already switched over to SOI, so there's not as much to worry about in shrinking? I know they report that they're encouraged by the engineering samples so far, but I wonder, when they then estimate 90nm wafer starts in production volume by end of Q2, how many (possibly minor) hurdles stand between the process as of right now, and actually delivering. In other words, how much "innovation" are they banking on between now and the end of Q2?

TIA,

Doug
