Condor,

Re: I can't entirely figure out why China would undertake to put a man on the moon at this juncture in their Boom. I would have thought their plate was more than full with economic development. Any ideas?

The punditocracy is pretty much at a consensus that national prestige is the key driving force behind this seemingly quixotic quest. This, of course, is the superficial answer.

It shouldn't be discounted that the moon shot would be part of a major expansion of space technological know-how for the Chinese military who can see that the U.S. DoD is spending lavishly on its attempts to control outer space as a significant military district in the 21st Century. Deterring America's extraterrestrial imperialism is clearly a concern for the Chinese and others.
