It’s odd how those who are willing to castigate Clinton for not eliminating Al Qaeda are willing to overlook the American support of Al Qaeda in previous administrations

Al Qaeda was founded in 1990,(1) and it's first move against us was the Trade Tower bombing in 1993.(2) So I don't think the previous admins can be blamed. That bombing was "Criminalized" by Clinton and the facts about it were withheld by the FBI from the CIA due to that decision.

Richard Miniter's book, Losing bin Laden: How Bill Clinton's Failures Unleashed Global Terror, is devastating on the subject. The key to the book is that Miniter interviewed the NSC people involved and they don't deny the facts. Their only argument back is on one issue: that the Sudanese Government was not serious about turning over Bin Laden. That argument has not stood up. In any case, they didn't even try with the Sudanese. Read some reviews and excerpts from the book.(3)

(2) Al Qaeda has also been linked to the 1993 bombing of the World Trade Center, the bombings of the US embassies in Kenya and Tanzania, and the attack on the USS Cole in Yemen

(3) One of the big myths about the Clinton years is that no one knew about bin Laden until Sept. 11, 2001. In fact, the bin Laden threat was recognized at the highest levels of the Clinton administration as early as 1993. What's more, bin Laden's attacks kept escalating throughout the Clinton administration; all told bin Laden was responsible for the deaths of 59 Americans on Clinton's watch.
