As you know, I have been subbing a lot this year, and have formed some opinions about our system that were probably gelling while the boys went through it.

Just now, out of curiosity, I googled Education and Teens, and came up with Drug Education, Sex Education, Alcohol Education, AIDS education.....
I guess in a way this is exactly my complaint about education. How far down the list are academics? IMO, it is actual LEARNING that will ultimately enable teens to make wise choices about these other issues.
I subbed yesterday and had shortened periods because it is Drug Awareness Week and they had an assembly. Then we had to cut our classes even shorter while they taped candy to a slogan they came up with that they were going to pass out this morning to other kids. (choir kids did "High on Life, not Drugs"- agh)
They were so wired from the schedule break they couldn't concentrate at all. Last week, the same thing happened over Spirit Week, when everyone wore funny clothes.
Just BEING a teenager is enough of a distraction.

Well, I'll stop- I just decided to start writing my thoughts as a starting place.

There are standards for passing a course. The kid either meets the standards of he doesn't. Not that your points aren't valid, only that they are peripheral. Much more damage is done, IMO, if there is no accountability.
