<After his speech, MPs gave Mr Hu a standing ovation>

It is a measure of America's ongoing defeat, in the global HeartsAndMinds wars, that Hu and Mahathir get standing ovations, and Bush meets protests wherever he goes. When Ashcroft visited my hometown, I was out waving banners, and I come from the next-to-most conservative State (only Utah gave a larger % to Bush in 2000, than Alaska).

China is going to make friends, by concentrating on trade and economic development. If China avoids the temptation to bully, they can steadily build a sphere of influence, from Siberia to Australia. The Alaskan economy is dominated by a few big foreign natural-resource and tourist companies. "Foreign" includes the Lower 48, whose interests may or may not have anything to do with what Alaskans want. Adding Chinese companies to the mix would benefit both China and Alaska. Again, with the caveat that the relationship must not have the faintest colonial smell.
