There is a brilliant and funny film called Peking Duck Soup, which was a sort of documentary on Mao and the cultural revolution, using a lot of Chinese news footage interspersed with bits out of Kung Fu movies. It came out in the late 60s or early 70s (I forget) when Maoism was very popular among European intellectuals (and even here in little NZ). In France, the stronghold of Maoism in Europe, it generated rage and fistfights in movie theatres. I've never seen mention of it since then, but I'd love to see it again.

In a nutshell, it exposes the madness of the cultural revolution and the Gang of Four (remember Lin Piao's death in an aeroplane "accident"). The hero of the film is Deng, whose political fortunes have him raised up, cast down and humiliated, then ultimatedly vindicated and given the highest position. I recommend it.
