Must be depressing to say the least. Up north, here in B.C. we went through this scenario a month ago or so, 200 homes lost this summer, & the damage estimated at 500 million dollars. Not just homes, but businesses, orchards etc. ...burnt.

Getting ready to short insurance companies.

Insurance company profits can rise after disasters. It gives them an excuse to raise insurance rates.

In sparsely populated countries -US, Canada, Australia- but with good infrastructure, people tend to live among wooden areas. Living among the woods, at river margins and on top of tectonic plates faults, is to be at the mercy of nature.

It is a fact of life that they are prone to fires, river margins can be swept by overflowing rivers and tectonic plates have a nasty habit of moving against each other and there isn't much we can do about.

Poor countries, being them most in the torrid belt, are hot, humid and living near a wooden area brings mosquitoes that likes to eat you alive, hence people keep away from wooden areas.

That notwithstanding, countries that are overpopulated, have populations living on volcano slopes, by the side of rivers since they have got no other place to go. Nature just work their numbers down once in a while.
