This should silence the holocaust deniers: Holocaust memorial backers exclude contractor with Nazi past By The Associated Press BERLIN - Backers of Germany's national Holocaust memorial said Monday they have halted work on erecting its central feature - 2,700 concrete slabs - after deciding to exclude a company that once part-owned the maker of the chemical used in Nazi gas chambers. Work on preparing the Berlin site and laying the slabs' foundations will continue, but anti-graffiti treatment of the slabs is being suspended until a new supplier is found, a committee overseeing the project said. In the memorial's latest delay, the panel said it dropped Degussa AG as coating contractor because the company's past made it "incompatible with the specific character of the memorial project." Degussa once owned a 42.2 percent share in Degesch GmbH, which delivered Zyklon-B cyanide tablets to the Nazis for use in the death camps' gas chambers. IG Farben, a chemical company dissolved by the Allies after World War II, held another 42.2 percent. Writer Lea Rosh, a prominent memorial supporter, said Degussa had intended its involvement as a reconciliatory gesture. But, after discussion, backers decided that "we draw the line at Zyklon-B," she said. German politicians rallied behind the project in the late 1990s, but wrangling over details persisted even after the final design was approved in 1999. Latest plans call for completion by May 8, 2005 - 60 years after Nazi Germany's defeat in World War II.
