MSI,

Re: Judging by body language it was the first time I've seen Kristol show fear, instead of the usual unmitigated Wolfowitz-type arrogance.

Wolfowitz was showing a lot of fear on Sunday as well. In spite of American denials, it certain seems plausible that Wolfowitz's movements were being monitored by the Iraqi opposition. And acted upon.

Occupation Watch Bulletin
October 27, 2003

Below we highlight several important articles we posted recently on the www.occupationwatch.org website. All shed light on the nature of the occupation underway in Iraq. Please help us spread the word about the Occupation Watch Center and our website by forwarding this bulletin to friends, family, email lists, and so on. Instructions for people who want to join the mailing list are at the bottom of the bulletin.

This past week, almost six months after George W. Bush declared “an end to major combat,” Nermeen Al-Mufti interviewed several Iraqis from various backgrounds and professions (an engineer, a former Iraqi army captain, and a school teacher among others) to assess the public mood:

None of Al-Mufti’s interviewees expressed support for Saddam Hussein and the former Ba'athist regime. Nevertheless, all were angry with the occupation and disappointed in the conduct of the US proconsul Paul Bremer and the occupation troops. Al-Mufti’s interviews differ dramatically from the Bush administration’s continuing campaign of spin and deception, whereby the administration, ignoring all evidence to the contrary, maintains that a majority of Iraqis support the occupation:

Intent upon measuring Iraq’s "impressive progress" during the last 6 months, Deputy Defense Secretary Paul Wolfowitz started a 3-day tour of Iraq on Friday, October 24. At a training base in Tikrit, Mr. Wolfowitz praised the new Iraqi Civil Defense Corps and declared "young Iraqis are stepping forward to fight for their country along with us":

But no sooner was Mr. Wolfowitz back in Baghdad than a rocket barrage hit the Al Rashid Hotel, where he and his entourage of government officials and bodyguards were staying. A senior American military officer died while several others were injured:

The worst problem facing the American occupation may not be the Iraqi resistance, which remains somewhat disorganized, but the morale of US troops:

Robert Fisk well sums up this “crisis of morale”:
