I am sorry if my habit of going in and out of focus on the thread has done you an injustice. That is not my intention. Let me say this: suppose you were right, and only external support maintained the power of the repressive elite. All that would mean would be that we are are faced with a situation where the Chinese or Saudis or whomever helped to sustain repression. Would our passivity improve the situation? And is an external aid necessary if the country has a commodity like oil or uranium which will fetch enough revenue to supply the regime with guns and thugs? And would an embargo likely lead to the overthrow of the regime, or would plenty of actors be willing to be sanction busters? And if the regime survived, but the embargo hurt the country, who would be hurt, members of the regime, or oppressed groups within the society?
