Hi FaultLine; Re: "If an organization wishes to remain shadowy, commit random acts of war against civilians, not wear uniforms, and not identify its members as combatants, why should the martial equivalent of the Marquis of Queensberry's rules be applied to it?"

The same logic applies to criminals. Should we just let the police do whatever they like with them?

The simple fact is that we do not. Even in the US itself, we do not give the police the authority to play outside the rules. And that is where the police and their charges speak the same language, etc.

In Iraq, we have to choose between the same three alternatives that the Israelis face in Palestine. We can leave. We can stay and make the locals knuckle under by wholesale slaughter. We can stay and let the locals shoot the crap out of us.

From A Man for All Seasons:

Roper: So, now you give the devil himself the benefit of law?

More: Yes, what would you do? Cut a great road through the law to get at the devil?

Roper: Yes! I'd cut down every law in England to do that.

More: Oh? And when the last law was down and the devil turned 'round on you, where would you hide...the laws all being flat? This country is planted thick with laws coast to coast, man's laws, not God's, and if you cut them down, ...do you really think you could stand upright in the winds that would blow then? Yes, I would give the devil the benefit of law for my own safety.

And:

First they came for the terrorists
and I did not speak out
because I was not a terrorist.

Then they came for the...

(you know how the rest of it goes, don't you?)

And:

Victory attained by violence is tantamount to a defeat, for it is momentary. Mahatma Gandhi

I see a steady acceptance, in my nation, of the idea that the only way to defeat terrorism, is to become a Police State. That is the proper label, for a State in which the apparatus of government power has no restraints in going after whoever they define as evil-doers, such as terrorists and mafia..... and me...... and you.
