Yes, both the Left and Right refer sneeringly to "Anglo- American" economics, and yet they are on the verge of recession and, despite a "social solidarity" orientation, deficient in elementary public services, compared to the United States. The deaths attributed to the heatwave in August were a big embarrassment. It took much too much time to respond, and, given the state of French amenities, like the lack of air- conditioning even in hospitals and nursing homes, there was a terrible manpower shortage. The sick needed ice baths and such. Yet it took a couple of weeks to ask organizations like the Red Cross to make up the shortage. Meanwhile, Chirac was on vacation in Quebec, and did not return until it was all over........
