If the other candidates were smart they would let the issue drop. Their attacks will only make it harder for the eventual candidate to compete in the South, whether or not they put a token Bubba on the ticket. I assume that you are not suggesting that Dean is a racist. He obviously was trying to make the point that his party needs to broaden its appeal in the South. Should the Democratic Party completely write off the South?

Two new Republican governors were elected in the South yesterday. One Democratic incumbent defeated and another replaced.
