Not quite. He won because he is a moderate Republican and because there was no primary to give the right-wingers a chance to eliminate anyone who could actually win a statewide election. California voters clearly rejected both the Democrat governor AND the top Democrat candidate in favor of a moderate Republican. Had the state GOP any sense, they'd have nominated Riordan the last go-around and there'd have been no recall. If they learn from this, CA could stay Republican for a while.

If the economy picks up as it looks like it will, the dems
with their stance on National security are in big trouble.
As for Iraq I think the administration has been too soft there. They need to start taking their gloves off, have
public executions of a few Bathists etc to show that they
mean business. Unfortunately election year politics is tying
the President's hands in Iraq to the detriment of our soldiers.
