I do not like either Rumsfeld or Paul Wolfowitz. The reality of the situation is a direct result of both those guys, but mostly Paul Wolfowitz. Frontline on PBS did a really great documentary last spring tracing exactly how we ended up in Iraq. Their key thesis was a report Paul Wolfowitz wrote before 9/11 advocating invasion of Iraq for WMD. His report was shelved during the first Bush administration, but reexamined after 9/11 and then fully enacted. Remember Iraq had to produce a mountain of documents last December accounting for all their WMD? I think what we now know is the the Iraqi paperwork was shoddy and I remember thinking at the time this is crazy. I was not an advocate of the war until after it started..by then the debate is over and once committed pulling out is even worse. Rumsfeld was the "genious" who said Iraq can be taken with 150,000 troops. I know my history and knew that very risky to go with that few troops. I said that if Saddam initiated the equivalent of the German Volksturm or People's Army like in Berlin in May 1945, 150,000 is not going to cut it. The Soviets invaded Berlin with over 1 million troops in the final assault and it still took weeks to take the city. The Soviets lost over 100,000 killed to fanatical SS and the Volksturm including 12 year olds with Panzerfausts. You know the movie of Hitler giving a medal to a young boy in the Hitler Jugend and patting his face in a line of other boys. That 12 year old kid knocked out a dozen soviet tanks by himself. Rumsfeld didn't know his history and what Baghdad could be like.
