HSINCHU, Taiwan -- Foundry chip maker Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company Ltd. said Friday (November 7, 2003) that net sales for October 2003 totaled NT$20,304 million (about US$596 million), and increase of 33.3 percent over the same period a year before.

The October 2003 net sales increased 7.4 percent from September 2003 and were the third consecutive record figure, the company said.

September 2003 net sales had increased 3.2 percent from August 2003 sales (see October 9 story).

Revenues for January through October 2003 totaled NT$164,429 million (about US$4.83 billion) an increase of 21.8 percent over the same period in 2002. The numbers indicate that TSMC, and the foundry industry in general, is coming out of the most recent downturn far more strongly than semiconductor makers in general.

Lora Ho, TSMC spokesperson and vice president, said the company's October 2003 wafer shipments grew over September 2003 due to increased customer demand in anticipation of the Christmas holiday season, especially for consumer and communication products. Ho did not comment on ASPs.
