I too would like to have a public discussion on the various possible targets and the ideas of how and if they are to be protected IF POSSIBLE, and if so, to what degree. I'm not at all sure that the majority of people in this country are afraid. Some in the media would like us to think so. I'm suspecting that so many people on the left, in particular, have bought into the hysterical jabbings of the 9+ who are running for President, PLUS the disgusting things that their "handlers" (McAullif, etc,) are mouthing every day. For instance, I think we need to have an immediate investigation about who wrote the memo from the Intelligence Committee and why...... That Committee of all of them should be totally bipartisan..... I had an interesting "discussion" with two good friends yesterday, VERY liberal friends. One is a retired teacher who still tutors, and the other, a widow, with contacts internationally with senior management type folks because of her late hubbys career. Both were upset with the Administration. Neither will watch the news, and really don't want to know much about any current info about Iraq. Don't want to discuss anything to do with "politics". They are both fearful about another 9-11. I'm truly wondering if it is the majority of the left who are so afraid. Perhaps this is why we seem to be getting such mixed messages. Listen and see who is staying current with events, and who isn't. See if they have well founded reasons for being anti-Bush, or if their reasons are purely emotionally driven. I said:Message 19475088 You said in reply:There could never be enough security to guarantee no further attacks. I think people, even the irrational and fearful public, understand that. But there have been a lot of reasonable ideas floated that haven't gone anywhere. WHAT ideas haven't gone anywhere?????????I think to protect itself from a backlash, as well as to protect us from terrorists, the administration should either do them or go through an open process and actively decide not to do them, with rationale, not just leave them floating on the breeze to be reclaimed by the injured and the scared and the media at such time as we're hit again. [This is no different than my assertion that the administration should tell us why it's putting hundreds of billions and almost all its eggs in the Iraq basket when there are other alternatives.] I believe the Government has implemented a lot more protection than we had pre 9-11, and that YES, more should be done, as I mentioned in the link. HOWEVER, because we have a free press, and people in various positions who feel free to leak very sensitive material, WHY would we put all our safeguards out in the open for the murderers/terrorists to circumvent???
