This command of “Lekh Lekha” means “Go on.” It is not only a command to our father Abraham, it is a directive that determines the mandate of Jewish life. Our father Abraham is destined to pave the way for the eternal life of the Children of Israel in the Jewish homeland. The Almighty promises Abraham that he will make him into a great nation. This future great nation of Israel nurtures a blessing of divine faith and moral life for all the peoples of the world. “You, (the Jewish people,) will be a blessing for all peoples.” These divine words put a great responsibility upon Abraham and his descendants. To bring a blessing to the nations of the world is not a simple task. The Children of Israel must cultivate the natural powers of sanctity within their Jewish soul, so that they penetrate all human activity and enlighten both spiritual and materialistic aspects of life. To ensure the achievement of this goal, the Almighty gave us the Torah, whose commandments encompass all fields of human life, to be imbued by the eternal values it expounds. The recognition of this great goal being the destiny of the Jewish people has produced great powers of faith, devotion and sacrifice throughout the generations. The complete fulfillment of the Torah and mitzvot in Jewish life served as a source of blessing and spiritual elevation that gave us the strength necessary to continue and overcome all obstacles. The continuous sacrifice for the sanctity of a Torah life has merited the deliverance of our people by the Almighty from the suppression of Jewish life in exile to a more complete and independent life in Eretz Yisrael. Unfortunately, even in Israel we must face wicked enemies whose goal is to continue that suppression of Jewish life. Thank G-d, those spiritual traits of faith and sanctity, which kept us going in exile, have revealed themselves in Eretz Yisrael as the source of courage, bravery and sacrifice in overcoming our enemies, with the help of G-d. We must gather our forces from the roots of Avraham Avinu, in order to continue this struggle to complete victory. It is from these roots that we hear again the resounding divine call “Lekh Lekha”, calling upon us: “Go on, keep going forward in your homeland and you will be blessed.” We Jews in the land of Israel continue to bear the responsibility of bringing a blessing to all peoples of the world. We are sure that the great efforts being invested in settling and building Eretz Yisrael - the Negev, the Galilee, Judea, Samaria and Golan - are not only bringing life to our people and our land, but are a necessary condition for bringing a blessing to all nations of the world. We cannot be deterred from this destiny, we cannot allow the powers of evil to permeate our homes and homeland, and we will never retreat from our divine roadmap. We must go on. We are being driven and strengthened by the words of the first divine commandment sounded to our father Abraham: “Go on to the land I will show you… and I will make you into a great nation… and you shall be a blessing… and all families of the earth will be blessed by you.”
