"do i pick the real oil company with real money and real world GTL experience, or do i pick the IVAN, with a shill known world wide as "toxic bob" who has no staff, no money and no experience..."

I think you're confusing E&P companies like IVAN who wish to do GTL, major oil companies with their own proprietary GTL technology (Shell, Sasol, Exxon, BP and Conoco), and pure GTL players (Syntroleum and Rentech) who possess licensable GTL technology. Since IVAN, along with most other E&P companies, doesn't have a GTL technology of their own and the majors aren't interested in licensing their technology, the only choice left for IVAN is to license GTL technology from either Syntroleum or Rentech. There is literally no other choice.

IVAN chose Syntroleum who's currently building a GTL demonstration plant with MRO and the DOE in Catoosa, Oklahoma, and who ran an operation GTL pilot plant at Cherry Point, Washington for several months a couple years ago. IVAN and SYNM may be ultimately unsuccessful in securing the huge monies necessary to build a commercial GTL plant, but this is not necessarily due to GTL technology or work experience problems. IVAN is in the same boat as every other E&P company looking to monetize their natural gas reserves.

There's no smoking gun here. You need to separate your personal feelings for Friedland and Calandra from the reality of this situation. You can't fault Friedland and IVAN for wanting to pursue GTL technologies. If Marathon can choose to license and use SYNM's GTL technology, why can't Ivanhoe?
