Joe:

Not only is the situation getting worse but there are major divisions in the US military and the administration about how to deal with it. Bush has created a nightmare -- no security in much of the country for either civilians or military, a US army that has never been properly trained for policing, and probably only about a quarter of the troops that would be needed to do that anyway. I read recently that at any one time, New York City has about 10,000 cops deployed -- whereas given the need for maximum 12 hour shifts and the fact that half the military are not combat troops anyway, the US has only about 2 or 3 times that number on duty at any one time to police a huge country like Iraq. And as the article pointed out, at least the New York cops can understand the language the locals are speaking -- albeit only just!

What a mess. And yes, this continued situation is bound to provide support to the POG. But as many others have said, the major factor is still the weakness in the US dollar and the likelihood it's going to fall much further. As well as the clear signs of future inflation as raw materials prices go through the roof. The CRB Index is a proxy for wholesale prices, and as an indicator it tends to lead consumer prices by about 6 months. JMHO.

Best,
Howy

I do not believe that anything of consequence has dawned or will soon dawn on the average person.
