the more i read about her case, the more i feel she is becoming the poster girl for people who should NOT be in the military (at least in a combat role)

what i know about her so far is this:

1. she enlisted for benefits (stated she wanted to become a teacher and decided the best way to pay for it was a stint in the military)

2. according to her, she was unable to fire her weapon in a combat situation (we don't know the reason for this, for example was she incompetent (a)left the safety on, b)did not properly maintain it OR did she have a faulty weapon, something i would think would be evident to her if she had been adequately performing "b")

3. we now find out that she was involved during her training engaged in behavior that would have warranted a discharge, possibly even a court martial

i agree with you to prosecute her now would be a PR nightmare. but the fact still remains that the army should really investigate it's own practices and policies.

just imagine the conversations that are going on right now within the ranks as the news of her "nude cavorting photos" are all over the news...

what kind of effect does it have on morale not only of the soldiers, but of their wives, girlfriends, etc...

we have an all volunteer army and while i'm sure this wouldn't be necessarily a deciding factor not to enlist (hell for some it might be a reason TO enlist) i think a number of people considering enlistment just might have yet another layer of worry and concern vis a vis their significant others....let's be honest here, few women would be thrilled with the idea of seeing their spouses/boyfriends in a situation where this kind of extreme fraternization is accepted... and make no mistake about it, as public as this matter has become, if the army doesn't respond publicly in some way, in other words SOME consequence for the guilty parties ...it will be viewed as a tacit acceptance.

right now we have an army colonel facing a court martial for assault for firing his weapon as a tactic to get information from a prisoner...

why should lynch and her other 2 "cohorts" in the photo be treated any differently?
