Amidst all the partisan rancor these days, it's hard to evaluate these claims that so-and-so was a war hero (or wasn't) or was AWOL (or wasn't).

I think Kerry deserves credit for going to Viet Nam to serve his country when many were not willing to do so. I think it is presumptuous for us to criticize him for allegedly "finishing off" an already wounded enemy. If somebody has been shot in the leg but still has his weapon, he is wounded but still presents a danger to you and your fellow troops. So if he did kill someone under suspicious circumstances, I just don't think there's enough there for us to criticize him about it. He deserves our gratitude for representing our country in a situation that was difficult to say the least.

I also don't think he deserves to be President, not because of anything that did or didn't happen in Nam but because he is simply too out of step with the rest of the country on too many issues, from defense to restraining social spending to dealing with external threats (voting against the first Iraq war is just incomprehensible to me). His affinity for Ted Kennedy's positions is strong. His affinity recently for Ted Kennedy's advisers is troubling. His managerial skills, judging from his campaign so far, are hardly awe inspiring. And his way of convincing us to vote for him is to .... ride onto Jay Leno's stage in a Harley?

I think he makes Dukakis look like a strong candidate.
