I belonged to the Federalist Society a long time ago, but let it drop for a while, and just rejoined. Rumsfeld was supposed to speak last night but there was a schedule change and he had to pull out and Andy Card spoke instead, so I was glad that I hadn't bought the ticket to that event. But well worth the price of the show yesterday was a panel on national soverignty and multilateralism, which featured several excellent speakers, including Krauthammer, who just kicked ass . I forgot my program book so can't remember the names of the rest of the panel members. Two multilateralists, I think a Brit named Bill Richardson who somehow has something to do with the UN, and a former US senator whose name escapes me completely, also serving on something to do with the UN, and a couple of other people towards the center, including William H. Taft, IV, who seemed shocked at the audience. Krauthammer was condemning the UN as morally bankrupt and hopelessly corrupt, and the audience was cheering. And during the question-and-answer people, some in the audience demanded of the UN people, why does the UN do things like appoint Libya to chair the Human Rights Committee, and why doesn't anybody but the US actually do anything about human rights? One lady in the audience demanded of the Brit, why do Europeans think they have the right to tell the US how to do things about terrorism and the Middle East when they do nothing? How can the UN and multilateral organizations criticize the US policy in Iraq and then pull out as soon as there is trouble (like the UN, the Red Cross, Medicines Sans Frontieres, just cutting and running) leaving us to deal with it? Where is the multilateralism then? One panel member, whose name I can't remember, got off a great rant about the EU being able to tell us what to do when they build 12 aircraft carriers. It was being filmed, I assume by C-SPAN, and I hope they show it. Very funny, Krauthammer's mike kept going out, and then someone on the panel would hand him theirs, and then theirs would go out, but mysteriously would work when they used it. I kept looking for the tech but didn't see him/her. On another panel, the tech was a very Rastafarian looking lady, who seemed to also cut speeches by very passionate conservatives. Coincidence?
