Steve,

Avast! routes your email through their servers in order to virus check it before it gets to your computer. I'm not having any trouble getting email, so it's unlikely their servers are the problem. Perhaps there is an incompatibility with the AT&T servers somehow.

I'd try turning off the email protection in Avast! then see if you can get email. If you retrieve it successfully, try turning it back on and see if it was just stuck somehow.

Naturally you need to exercise care when opening the email that has not been virus scanned.
