The powers that be certainly can stop gold. It could be made illegal to own and confiscated overnight.

How do I know? Because it already happened. Roosevelt did it. The Kennedy administration even made it a crime for United States citizens to own gold outside the U.S.

This is the main reason you never hear John Templeton mentioning gold as an alternative.
