I think this is a good issue for the Republicans, but not "The" issue.

Jackie Calmes reports in Washington Wire that "Conservative Family Research Council says 'THE issue' for Republicans is a gay-marriage ban, which has added resonance since Democratic front-runner Howard Dean backed gay "civil unions" when he was Vermont governor."

Don't give it up, FL. LB's thread and yours are still the two places where there can be a "mostly" salon....a meeting of ideas. Yours was so good, but really the lefty's have taken the wagon for a bit, just as they did with the GWB thread. The GWB board long ago was a great place for exchanges of ideas, but gradually, what you see today happened.

My own observation is that there are wayyyyyy to many of the GreenLeft/GreenRight (who IMO are the same) who take over everything, or try to...NION, ANSWER, Rukkus type folks who can only use trash mouth, and battering rams--almost as if they are rude children who weren't taught any manners, and continued along that path as adults.

LB was right to get after me, as this thread is important to all of us. Of course I was saddened to see that he took my comments as personal ones, specifically pointed AT someone, rather than in general as in "if the shoe fits"...

Unfortunately, Foreign Affairs in so many ways has political beginnings and implications, and that has come to the fore certainly more so in the last decade. The media has continued that, and now imposed that thought process on the entire foreign affairs discussion, IMO.

Ken, you've done yeoman's work keeping us in line. The problem is that a lot of posters, including yours truly, but only on limited occasions, vbg, forget that opinions should be based on some modicum of study. We unfortunately see a lot of opinions that are simply statements without any basis in fact, unsupported by anything except the poster's need to be heard.

I tried to get a bit of a discussion going there recently by mentioning the recent article in Foreign Affairs about Hizbollah and the archived statement by Allen Foster Dulles concerning German reconstruction. No one bit. Hey, I tried.

Perhaps the solution is to make the right to post subject to a bit more intellectual rigor by requiring supporting documentation for an opinion or at least discussion of pertinent articles, essays, etc., instead of the prevalent finger painting in a sandbox.

Hi Ken,
FADG just is a symbol of how political discourse in this country has deteriorated. It is beginning to remind me of france in the 1950s, pre-deGaulle. And this just didnt start yesterday--and it is the fault of both parties(particilarly the extremes) and all citizens including moi.
I wonder whether some of us can even sit down anymore and have a beer. I found myself on the verge of a heart attack reading some of the posts which I considered just plain anti-american in nature. And then i would respond in kind. That is why i mostly stopped posting.
Anyway it t'aint your fault and I hope we can get back to more civilized, studied discourse sometime in the future. Stay healthy Ken and dont let the bastards get you down. (Kristofferson to Sinaad O'Conor if you remember) Mike
