Your question was inevitable, Micawber.

Why do you think brokers and even individual agents put links to listings other than their own on their personal websites? Why do they publish links to listings not just in their own area but all around the country?

Let's just say that internet technology-- and its methods of directing web users to particular sources for more information-- have progressed a little further than you might think, and point out that maybe you don't understand how real estate brokerage and successful real estate agents work in many parts of the country.

When Doughboy made the statement that certain particular Realtor-member companies were going to put NAR's website (Homestore/Realtor.com) out of business, it was clear that the level of public misunderstanding is much greater than imagined.

At least one company Doughboy mentioned as being in a position to put NAR's website out of business not only happens to be an NAR member, but pays dues to keep the NAR website in operation and presumably advertises there.

It's not that difficult to have a medium which captures leads and to earn a referral from it. The number of hits will be correlated with exposure and its cost.
