It's not a binary result.
Having the pharmacutical companies respond to market pressures, such as letting the consumer shop by price in foriegn lands if it makes sense for them does not turn off the spigot of profits for these companies. It just makes them think about the end user (patient) and not just the broker (doctor).

"draining the profit out of future drugs"

>>> Hey, in a free market, Big Pharma should be able to charge whatever the market will bear for their goods... but if they think they can charge US citizens MORE than they charge the Swiss, thinking we are too dumb to notice - and all because their Cartel has erected huge barriers to free trade - they they have another thing coming.

>>> And, if they say all that price gouging is just so they will be able to 'develop new, and innovative drugs', then I say: "Great! If we are financing all of your R&D, then we are investors --- so start sending me my equity shares!"

what the heck are you talking about.
Protectionism is not equal to capitalism. The current system is protectionism, this new drug plan is protectionism. There is no free market cost driver whatsoever.

Republicans are all for free markets until something affects them or their lifestyle. Paying 100K/year for some drug which can be obtained in Canada for one tenth the price makes no sense.

I suggest some of the republicans here go read a book on what FREE MARKET CAPITALISM really is. Hint: it is not what Bush practices, a gimme gimme for corporate america and his cronies.

If Merck cannot compete with itself or competitors elsewhere in the world it should be put out of business.
