Ex-Japanese soldier testifies in court on atrocities in China

Tuesday, November 18, 2003 at 05:26 JST
TOKYO — A former Imperial Japanese Army soldier gave evidence Monday at the Tokyo High Court about atrocities Japanese soldiers committed in China during World War II. The 83-year-old man testified during a hearing for a damages suit lodged against the Japanese government by four Chinese women from Shanxi Province.

"My comrades have no intention of speaking, but I will reveal my disgraceful behavior to make up," the man said. As a recruit, he was first taught how to stab Chinese people to death, he said. The man said he went into a village Chinese and raped a young Chinese woman with other soldiers. He confessed that he killed the woman to hide his wrongdoing. (Kyodo News)
