JF, Not to accept what they have done, but to better understand why they've done it.

There is a deep religious undertone to their actions, and there is a deep religious undertone behind their supporters. To paint this as a secular struggle between the haves and the have-nots is to miss the mark.

That's exactly why I said what they want isn't exactly what you might have in mind. They see nations adopting a Western way of life and wonder why they're being left out. They see overt sexual images in the media and are highly alarmed. They see the corruption of material wealth and possessions, which of course are affecting the Arab monarchies as well, and they blame Western capitalism. They see the power that Jews and Christians have all over the world (whether they deserved it or not) and get jealous.

In other words, it's a cultural war to them. And no amount of socialism is going to satisfy them, because they are in it for themselves and their twisted beliefs. Still think we can just "get along" with them? They'd be happier if our influence in the world fell away so that they can increase theirs. Think they'll stop at the "borders" of the Middle East? I sure don't, so let's not wait until the problem becomes bigger or fool ourselves into thinking we can "contain" them.

If your were a very proud and patriotic Arab and devout Muslim, how would you react?

If I was a patriotic Arab and devout Muslim, or if I was a patriotic, devout, intolerant, angry Islamic Arab?

Most patriotic and devout people in the area are not viokent extremists.

They attack, defeat, and occupy your Arab neighbor. They overthrow the Taliban.

I think even the devout Muslims, at least those who have some understanding of the outside world and some sort of logical though process could understand that one even if they don't cheer it.

They consume the majority of your national resources at prices set by the corrupt monarchy, while the extended family of the King lives in ultimate luxury.

They buy the main product that your country sells. Without these purchases and those of other western countries your countries wealth and income would be much lower. They buy this product at a fair market rate or sometimes when OPEC has one of its more effective moments at a price above a free market rate. I suppose if in addition to being devout and patriotic I was ignorant its possible that I might see things the way you laid them out in your post, but it does require a lot of ignorance or enough unreasoning anger to blind you to reality.
