Yes, they held elections. So did N. Vietnam, repeatedly. Under the guns of the soldiers, both North and South. The U.S. owned S. Vietnam, from 1954 through 1975, and there was not a single free and fair election, during that entire time. The thugs we put in power, did all the same things the Communists did: kill opponents, use torture routinely in their Gulags, suppress freedom of speech, close down opposition newspapers, etc.

You define a regime as part of the "free world" simply because they are an American ally (or puppet). To you, it doesn't matter if, in every other way, they act exactly like Stalin did.
