A few years ago I read this - as I recall - fascinating book:

amazon.com

THe authors think that in this Age of Information the notion of a Nation - State is outdated, and that over time all countries are going to break up into a great number of small jurisdictions. Citizens of those micro countries will be "maximally" represented, in the sense - I think - which you have in mind. If one doesn't like a given jurisdictions's policies, one would merely pick one nearby - which he likes better, where he, in a sense, would be better "represented". Jurisdictions will compete for citizens, which, presumably, would be good for everyone.

I like this idea, and will be very glad if I see it become reality (I guess, to get there I would have to live almost forever -g). But, in the meantime, we have to live in a world where we have to compromise all the time, sometimes to the point of pain. Well... such is life.

Over the years, on a few occasions, I didn't bother to vote - I figured that it was more important for me at the time to do what I was doing, rather then travel to cast a vote which would be in practical terms meaningless, one in millions... I try not to think this way. I try to think in terms of personal responsibility.
