I think they can get by with their authoritarian gov and outlast an economic war with the US whereas the US has never experienced a sustained period of difficulty since the depression (and not many around today remember that). <<Don't know about that either. Ever see a Chinese person from Hong Kong try to speak with someone from Manchuria or Bejing? They have an incredible number of language dialects, each effectively separating them from one another culturally. That is true in specific examples but not in a broad sense and we're looking at things in pretty broad strokes don't you think? Mandarin is the world equivalent to English. <<But as a people, they really seem to like Americans (related to me by a buddy who lived there for 9 months last year).>> Sure, but again, it is the policies of those in control that matter most. I lived in Asia several times, and I'm 1/2 Chinese on my mother's side (mum is from Taiwan). They can do without America if it is not in their best interest in my opinion. China has a powerful future and they are cranking out scientists, doctors, engineers, mathematicians at a greater rate than anywhere else in the world (Indians are doing ok too). The US world hegemony may well be at risk in a couple generations .. but that is probably why the US will never give up its nuclear weapons. It makes one rule for itself and another for everyone else.
