I am just a superficial dabbler, but the idea of the "Volk", as far as I know, is related to and originates from the ancient notions of the powerful free Pagan man... I read that Carl Jung claimed that as early as back in the 20's he was able to predict that Germany will be in a major war. He arrived at this conclusion by analyzing the character of the emerging archetypes, which he observed with increasing frequency in his patients - and in the society at large.

Nazis - it appears - thought that the Judeo-Christian influences only served to entrap and enslave the powerful ancient free spirit of the German people (the "Volk"). Part of the campaign against the Jews was to discredit and to destroy those influences. It is a common misunderstanding that Nazis were Christians. In essence, they were (and are) Pagans.
