or open the entire S.E. Asia to ourselves via China as the door to North America

The Americans won't let this happen of course. Think they're stupid? hmmm don't answer that LOL

Vancouver is the gateway to trade with the east. Bush will shut this down by scrapping the trade agreements with Canada, as we have already seen when its to their advantage, and the Vancouver economy will CRUMBLE. Can you believe all the idiots buying houses in Vancouver/Victoria right now ? They listen to the real estate agents hype which always comes at the top of a bubble. It never occurs to them that Americans will have to pull out of their real estate purchases here in order to cover their crumbling value at home as the bubble down there bursts. Actually it is in their best interests to sell, IF they own their properties, as the Loonie rises and try to time it before interest rates rise in Canada as they have a profit on foreign exchange and the recent rise in home prices. BUT if they have mortgaged their properties as most have done, it will cost them more each month in payments as the Loonie rises. Either way I see nothing but trouble for the Vancouver real estate market. Don't forget that if there are new tariffs then many Chinese business people living in Canada will go home and sell their homes also. No, I don't agree that Canada can become an effective backdoor to the USA. Too obvious.

We can hope that Bush is just posturing and doesn't intend to carry this any further.

I agree with you Condor.

We should do as much as we can to trade with China. If they were to discover wood houses the market for lumber would be much larger than the USA.
Infact if we had half a brain we would develop and test a building standard for pine- for use in dry bug free areas. The stuff is very cheap over here - all we have to do is be smart enough to market it.
Ditto with wheat. If the Americans want to subsidize their wheat production and raise walls then lets look elsewhere.
Of course there is dumping and and subsidsleeze and all that other stuff to consider but that should not distract anyone from the simple solutions.
While the Chinese sell us cheap T shirts we can sell them houses. While they build cheap cars we should be building ships to go to mars.

All this and Gold as the basis for monitary exchange. Should be a start for starting a balanced economy.
