i heard that about mtbe and the trial lawyers connection on tv friday, and i thought to myself that i need to be more cynical to think outside the box on my feet better. it's so simple when looked at from the trial lawyer full employment perspective. so here is an out of the box question: would the unabomber have been caught faster or slower had he targeted trial lawyers only?

"No Lobbyist Left Behind" is how Senator McCain describes the energy bill. 100% grade c pork, but what else is new?

Maybe we should come up with our own ideas of what an energy bill should do? Here's my list.

ANWR, California offshore, Atlantic coast, and eastern GOM should all be opened up for exploration.

Permitting for offshore LNG should be fast-tracked.

Coal bed methane subsidies repealed.

From the funds received from permitting the eastern GOM and atlantic, research is conducted in one and only one area - clean coal.

No funding for research except that from royalty and lease sales. Total cost of bill to taxpayers is 0.

Benefits include;

A new wave of e&p in our own waters, triggering job creation and domestic investment.

Clean coal: If, through research, a process such as coal gasification can become competitive with petroleum, think of the how this would change the US's energy picture. Could we be a net exporter of energy?

That's it - no ethanol subsidy, no tax breaks/subsidies for the utilities/campaign contributors, no mbte whatever, no repeal of puhca, no clownish claims that we need this bill for "national security". Just exploiting what we already have and going deep and long with a research agenda that has the potential to change the balance of power in the energy wars.
