Sullivan is really an excellent writer. But what he fails to account for is during the early eighties the gay population was doing everything in its power to distance itself from the aids epidemic. In other words, "it wasn't a gay disease" was their rallying cry.

Thousands died as a result of the gay community and leading gay publications denial of the reality of the disease. And Reagan would have been villified in the press as a gay hater or worse for suggesting the link existed then.

Even today, the myth that aids is a equal opportunity killer is still rampant. The fact is if you don't engage in anal sex, or shoot needles into your arms, you have a better chance of getting hit by lightning than of catching aids.

All those predictions of millions of heterosexuals dying of the disease never panned out.

It's a terrible disease, and we should have compassion for the people inflicted by it, but the cause is largely known. *Behavior* can largely prevent a person from catching the disease, but to say so is tantamount to gay bashing.
