We are spending 15% of our GDP on health care. A good chunk of that is paid by the government anyway via Medicare and Medicaid. Another chunk, perhaps a third, is wasted on the medical bureaucracy. Almost every other developed country with national health insurance is paying around 10% of GDP and has higher life expectancy and much lower infant mortality to show for it. Interestingly, almost all of them have older populations.

Why will it bankrupt us and not them? Are we that stupid?

Anecdotally, talking to old colleagues, I am stunned at the dramatic change in their position relative to this issue. These are typically hard core Republicans. But now that they see slim chances of reaching normal retirement age as regular health-covered employees in the tech industry, they seem very receptive to a Canadian-style health insurance system.

My prediction is that by 2008, when Hillary is running for President, the Republican candidate will either embrace National Health insurance or lose to Hillary in a landslide.
