Unless there is a serious and compelling reason to change the existing policy it will continue. In fact, I'm surprised that you have such confidence in government to expect that it could, or even would, arbitrate, and then wisely, between the needs of the consumer and those of the worker. Government is concerned only about one thing (other than its own enrichment and power) and that is that the rich get richer. I'm sure you have read the Gospel according to St George, the Incorruptible. Indeed, the very first line states: "Blessed art the rich for they are the Chosen Ones and it is they who will inherit the Kingdom of Heaven. Furthermore, any government which enables this will henceforth sit at the feet of the Almighty and will be His disciple." The Wal-Mart article demonstrates this perfectly : >>>The connection may be lost on many, Reich said, but consumers' addiction to low prices is accelerating a shift toward a two-tiered U.S. economy, with a shrinking middle class and a growing pool of low-wage workers.<<< What he forgot to say, however, is that it's a three-tiered economy with the rich, on top, getting richer while the others are being squeezed to Hell. But that's how it is supposed to be. The Scripture says so. > In my view, these decisions are significantly more important that the hobson's choice currently available at the voting place (hence my lack of concern about being politically disenfranchised). When we empower walmart with our dollars we are 'electing' them to make decision about the world we live in, such as, should there be unrestrained free trade with china, in a much more significant way then any conventionally elected official. Ok, so I realize this is not an original idea. But don't you think the union officials would spend more time educating their member on these relationships than worrying who to support in the next election? There are no decisions being made or to be made. The status quo will prevail. If the unemployed and disenfranchised want to survive they will have to wake up to the reality of the situation which is that manufacturing jobs in the US, and other Western countries, are on the way out. In the circumstances, survival must depend on acquiring new skills (if the unemployed are industrial workers). Many, unfortunately, can find no gainful employment other than the military. For them, the situation is, indeed, awful but that is Amerika for you. God's own country. Where we hold that all are created equal and are endowed by the Creator with certain inalienable rights. ---------------------------- Interesting about Amazon becoming the new library of Alexandria. Brings to mind three things: 1. What an enterprising guy Jeff Bizos is. 2. What a loss to the world the burning of the library at Alexandria was 3. Just how fantastic the internet is. In fact, Amazon's library coming, as it does, on top of the already amazing internet, must surely be one of the wonders of the modern age. That every person in the world will have access to all existing, written information is truly mind blowing.
