Neocon, you usually function at a high level intellectually but this time you disappoint me. Can you not see that the "war" in Vietnam was unwinnable because the purpose of the war was to subjugate the population of VIETNAM to our view of what kind of government Vietnam should have? Sure we beat Germany and Japan "without killing all of them," but the pupose of THAT WAR was to stop THEM from subjugating us to their will.

One was a war to stop them from forcing us, ie a DEFENSIVE war. The other was a war to force THEM to adopt OUR view of what their nation should be. One requires that we reduce their ability to be an offensive military power, the other requires that we be able to control the everyday lives of millions of people that are willing to resist to the death. The first type of war is winnable, the second lasts as long as the ideas have power that fuel the resistance.

Surely you see that. By the way, would you say that the "war" in Iraq is the Vietnam type of war, or the Germany-Japan type of war? I think you know the answer.
