Lizzie,

I sincerely wished I could agree with you. My assessment of Bush's prospects are quite a bit more glum from the perspective of what is good for the country. I.e., I believe George Bush is the strongest candidate in the 2004 race. Not because he's the best, the most honorable, has a shred of decency or deserves to be re-elected. My concern that he will be re-elected is based on my cynical understanding of how remarkably uninformed and easily manipulated the general public is today.

People who read things like this thread are a tiny minority of the population. And even when you look at the SI community in aggregate, Bush would win the election in a very convincing manner, if not a landslide. Even ostensibly sensible people who I respect for their intelligence seem to be perfectly willing to gloss over Bush's obvious ethical lapses because they see him as being good for business and stock prices, or on the right wing side of the moral issues such as abortion and so-called "family values".

It is not at all clear to me that Bush has lost the heartland vote. And he never did have the vote of the much more sophisticated coastal states.
