I've posted that I think the settlements are not good policy and that Israelis would probably not elect Sharon but for the terror campaign.

However, calling the Israeli occupation "illegal" uses a term that is inappropriate. There is no Israeli law that makes it illegal and Israel is a sovereign nation entitled to defend itself. The UN, we all know, is pretty much a political animal and has no real relevance unless reconstructed in a way that the US and the other core security council members give up powers to veto anything of significance.

Getting away from the legal issues, which are really bogus, one must ask himself how one would react with the spectre of terror on a daily basis. We see how the US has reacted after 9/11. Now imagine a 9/11 (equivalent in Israel) on a monthly basis.

All in all, I believe little Israel has acted quite admirably in keeping its ideals in the face of this threat. It's easy to be critical from the safey of our cozy computer desks.

Recent events in Turkey, Saudi Arabia and other Moslem nations show that it is almost impossible to negotiate with hard core Muslims. The only chance is to be strong as they apparently have respect for strength.

Again - I'd like to see Israel stop encouraging settlements but they can't negotiate with themselves. Arafat has cut the legs off of his own prime ministers and refused to give them authority. In all likelihood, his prime motivation is the estimated billion dollars pilfered from funds intended for his people, funds that would go a long way to lifting their standard of living.

But the move is seen as an important symbolic gesture and evidence of new efforts by the US to calm the conflict.

Wrong. This is way more than symbolic. The Israelis regularly renege on loans, and the U.S. Congress, in the middle of the night, as it did with the rape of the Medicare program, regularly cheats the American public by paying off on loan guarantees that the Israelis have defaulted on.

It is one of the greatest unknown frauds of the last 50 years. Because the Jews control the media, and they don't have the unfortunate habit of Catholics of confessing their sins.
